A 5.0 magnitude quake was registered near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Tuesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck the area at 05:29 UTC (16:29 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter located approximately 151 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

Last week, there have been 22 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby, four of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest one was a 6.1 earthquake that was recorded in the same region one day ago.
