A 6.8 magnitude quake was detected near Yamada Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The tremor, which struck the area at 08:03 UTC (18:03 local time), was centered about 122 km east of Yamada. It occurred at a depth of 18 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 6.7 but later upgraded to 6.8.
