Update: Earthquake strikes region close to Abepura, Indonesia on Oct. 16 – 6.5 magnitude reported

SARMI REGENCY, Papua — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 6.5 magnitude quake slammed close to Abepura Thursday afternoon.

It was reported that a tremor slammed the area at 05:48 UTC (14:48 local time). The epicenter was located approximately 194 km west-northwest of Abepura, at a depth of 33 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 6.7 event, but later downgraded it to 6.5.
