At 8 a.m. Monday, the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory stating that Gabrielle became a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 120 mph after intensifying from a Category 1 hurricane. Category 3 Hurricane Gabrielle is in the Atlantic Ocean, 195 miles southeast of Bermuda. The hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, is moving north at 10 mph.

“… the center of Gabrielle is expected to pass east of Bermuda tonight”, meteorologists stated about the hurricane.

Hazards affecting land

Surf. Swells generated by Gabrielle will continue to affect Bermuda during the next few days. These swells are now reaching the east coast of the United States from North Carolina northward, as well as Atlantic Canada, and are expected to continue through the early part this week. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
