Update: 5.3 magnitude earthquake hits near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on Sept. 20

A 5.3 magnitude quake was detected near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Saturday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor struck at 02:47 UTC (14:47 local time), with its epicenter located roughly 77 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and a depth of 72 km.

Tremors last week

In the past week, the area has experienced 58 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or higher, four of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The strongest, a 7.8 magnitude quake, hit the same region one day ago.
