Update: Sept. 18 – 5.0 magnitude earthquake detected near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia

A 5.0 magnitude quake was registered near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Thursday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor struck the area at 20:48 UTC (07:48 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter situated approximately 166 km southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.1 event, but later downgraded it to 5.0.

In the past week, there have been 11 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby, three of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The biggest, a 6.0 magnitude quake, hit the same region three days earlier.
