Update: Earthquake hits region close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Aug. 30 – 5.0 magnitude recorded

A 5.0 magnitude quake was detected close to Severo-Kuril’sk Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 16:59 UTC (02:59 local time), the area was jolted by a tremor. The earthquake struck at a depth of 24 km, with its epicenter roughly 119 km southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk. The magnitude was originally reported as 4.9 but later upgraded to 5.0.
