Sept. 4: Earthquake measuring 5.0 rattles region close to Nikolski, AK

ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — the U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake jolted close to Nikolski Thursday morning.

The tremor shook at 7:54 p.m. (8:54 a.m. local time), with its epicenter located roughly 77 miles south of Nikolski and a depth of 21 miles.

The National Tsunami Center has released a Tsunami statement in connection with the earthquake. For the latest updates, please visit tsunami.gov.

Tremors last week

During the past week, the area has experienced nine quakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The strongest, a 6.0 magnitude quake, slammed the same region one day ago.
