ALEUTIANS WEST CENSUS AREA, AK — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude quake hit near Nikolski Thursday morning.
A tremor jolted the area at 7:01 p.m. (8:01 a.m. local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was situated roughly 62 miles south-southwest of Nikolski and occurred at a depth of 44 miles.

Quakes past week
Over the last week, there have been eight earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The largest one was a 6.0 earthquake that was recorded in the same region one day ago.
