Update: 5.0 magnitude earthquake detected close to Macquarie Island region on July 26

A 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded near Macquarie Island region Saturday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was reported that a tremor struck the region at 20:46 UTC (07:46 local time). The epicenter was situated of Macquarie Island region, at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

Tremors last week

Last week, the area has experienced three tremors of magnitude 6.1 or above. The most significant was a 6.6 magnitude earthquake reported in the same region prior to this quake.
