Update: 5.1 magnitude earthquake hits near Sand Point, AK on July 17

ALEUTIANS EAST BOROUGH, AK — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude quake struck near Sand Point Thursday afternoon.

The tremor shook at 1:12 a.m. (2:12 p.m. local time), with its epicenter located approximately 53 miles south-southeast of Sand Point and a depth of 23 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.
