Update: 5.1 magnitude earthquake jolts near Bonin Islands, Japan region on July 18

CHIISAGATA DISTRICT, Nagano — According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.1 magnitude quake hit close to Bonin Islands Friday afternoon.

The tremor shook the area at 09:19 UTC (18:19 local time). It occurred at a depth of 491 km with the epicenter located of Bonin Islands. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.6 event, but later upgraded it to 5.1.
