Update: Earthquake measuring 5.0 rattles area close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Aug. 4

A 5.0 magnitude quake was registered close to Severo-Kuril’sk Monday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor struck the region at 06:48 UTC (16:48 local time). It occurred at a depth of 39 km with the epicenter situated about 123 km south-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk.

Tremors past week

Last week, the area has experienced eight tremors of magnitude 5.5 or above. The biggest, a 6.0 magnitude quake, was recorded in the same region five days earlier.
