Update: 5.0 magnitude earthquake hits close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Aug. 1

SEVERO-KURILSKY DISTRICT, Sakhalin Oblast — A 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded near Severo-Kuril’sk Friday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 05:06 UTC (15:06 local time), the region was jolted by a tremor. The earthquake rattled at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter roughly 246 km south-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk.

Tremors last week

Over the last week, seven earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or above have been detected in the area. The biggest, a 5.5 magnitude quake, was reported in the same region two days ago.
