July 20: Earthquake of 7.5 magnitude registered close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 7.5 magnitude quake hit near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Sunday afternoon.

A tremor rocked the area at 06:49 UTC (17:49 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was situated approximately 153 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and occurred at a depth of 77 km.

In the past week, there have been four earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 7. The largest one was a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that was detected in the same region prior to this quake.
