July 16: Earthquake measuring 7.2 slams region near Sand Point, AK

ALEUTIANS EAST BOROUGH, AK—According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 7.2 magnitude quake struck near Sand Point Wednesday morning.

At 8:37 p.m. (9:37 a.m. local time), the area was slammed by a tremor. The earthquake devastated at a depth of 22 miles, with its epicenter roughly 54 miles south of Sand Point.
