Update: 7.2 magnitude earthquake slams near Sand Point, AK on July 16

ALEUTIANS EAST BOROUGH, AK—the U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 7.2 magnitude quake occurred near Sand Point Wednesday morning.

The tremor shook at 8:37 p.m. (9:37 a.m. local time), with its epicenter situated about 54 miles south of Sand Point and a depth of 22 miles.

The National Tsunami Center has released a Tsunami statement in connection with the earthquake. For the latest updates, please visit tsunami.gov.
