System name: Barry
The National Hurricane Center’s 10 am Sunday advisory reported that the system, which had been named Barry, became a tropical storm with sustained winds of 40 mph after intensifying from a tropical depression. The name gain was first announced in the 10 a.m. update. Tropical Storm Barry is currently at the Gulf of Mexico, 90 miles east-southeast of Tuxpan Mexico and 165 miles southeast of Tampico Mexico. With maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, it is moving to the northwest at 6 mph.
“… the storm is expected to make landfall and then move inland over eastern Mexico later today or tonight”, analysts stated. “A little more intensification is forecast before the system reaches the coast of eastern Mexico.” They also said “Rapid weakening is expected after the system moves inland”
Today, the system that was once a tropical depression has now officially been named Tropical Storm Barry as it has strengthened into a tropical storm. The 10 a.m. report was the first to confirm the system’s new name.

A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, in this case within 12-24 hours.
Hazards affecting land
Rainfall. Tropical Storm Barry is expected to produce rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated maximum totals of 10 inches, across the Mexican states of Veracruz, San Luis Potosi, and Tamaulipas through Monday. This rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain.

Wind. Tropical storm conditions, especially in gusts, are expected in the tropical storm warning area beginning this afternoon.
