According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 7.0 magnitude quake occurred near Severo-Kuril’sk Sunday afternoon.
It was reported that a tremor hit the region at 05:37 UTC (16:37 local time). The epicenter was situated about 121 km east of Severo-Kuril’sk, at a depth of 41 km.

Tremors past week
Last week, eight quakes of magnitude 5.5 or above have been registered in the area, eight of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The strongest, a 6.4 magnitude quake, was detected in the same region four days ago.
