6.0 magnitude earthquake hits near Kaktovik, AK on March 22

NORTH SLOPE BOROUGH, AK — A preliminary 6.0 magnitude quake shook near Kaktovik on Sunday night, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 5:35 a.m. (9:35 p.m. local time). The epicenter was roughly 48 miles south of Kaktovik, at a depth of 11 miles.

Quakes past week

Last week, six earthquakes with a magnitude 2.5 or greater have been registered in the area. The strongest, a 4.2 magnitude tremor, was detected in the same region four days earlier.
