FUTAMI DISTRICT, Hokkaido — the U.S. Geological Survey reported a 5.9 magnitude quake shook close to Otobe at midnight on Monday.

The tremor struck the area at 15:45 UTC (00:45 local time). It occurred at a depth of 144 km with the epicenter roughly 19 km northeast of Otobe.
