Update: 5.1 magnitude earthquake reported near Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on Aug. 6

A 5.1 magnitude quake was recorded close to Severo-Kuril’sk Wednesday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was reported that a tremor jolted the region at 05:01 UTC (16:01 local time). The epicenter was located about 207 km east-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk, at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.

Tremors last week

Last week, there have been 51 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or higher centered nearby, three of them larger than magnitude 6.1. The largest, measuring 6.2, rocked the same area six days earlier.
