Update: 5.3 magnitude earthquake jolts close to Ascension Island on March 1

A 5.3 magnitude quake was reported near Ascension Island Sunday afternoon, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 18:36 UTC (17:36 local time), the region was hit by a tremor. The earthquake struck at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter north of Ascension Island. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later upgraded it to 5.3.
