Update: Earthquake measuring 5.0 rattles area near Kimbe, Papua New Guinea on Feb. 4

TALASEA DISTRICT, West New Britain Province — Wednesday afternoon, a 5.0 magnitude quake was reported near Kimbe, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tremor struck the region at 04:25 UTC (14:25 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was situated approximately 9 km southwest of Kimbe and occurred at a depth of 139 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.1 but later downgraded to 5.0.
