Update: Earthquake of 5.1 magnitude reported near Bitung, Indonesia on April 17

A 5.1 magnitude quake hit close to Bitung on Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted at 23:29 UTC (08:29 local time), with its epicenter approximately 128 km east of Bitung and a depth of 35 km.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, the area has experienced seven quakes of magnitude 2.5 or higher. The strongest, a 5.2 magnitude quake, struck near Ternate on Apr. 13.
