Update: Aug. 1 – 5.1 magnitude earthquake registered close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia

A 5.1 magnitude quake was detected near Severo-Kuril’sk Friday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor shook the area at 10:59 UTC (21:59 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter situated roughly 248 km east-southeast of Severo-Kuril’sk.

Last week, there have been 12 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The most significant was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake recorded near Ozernovskiy two days earlier.
