Update: 5.0 magnitude earthquake detected near Vilyuchinsk, Russia on Aug. 8

A 5.0 magnitude quake was recorded close to Vilyuchinsk Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor jolted the area at 22:05 UTC (09:05 local time). It occurred at a depth of 21 km with the epicenter located approximately 166 km southeast of Vilyuchinsk.

Tremors last week

During the past week, there have been 74 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or above centered nearby, three of them larger than magnitude 5.5. The biggest, a 6.0 magnitude quake, hit the same region six days ago.
