Update: 5.1 magnitude earthquake jolts near Palu, Indonesia on June 16

SIGI REGENCY, Central Sulawesi — A 5.1 magnitude quake shook close to Palu around midday Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The tremor struck at 04:14 UTC (12:14 local time), with its epicenter about 51 km southeast of Palu and a depth of 10 km. The magnitude was originally reported as 5.0 but later upgraded to 5.1.

Two tremors closeby past week

In the past week, two tremors exceeding magnitude 2.5 have been centered in the region. Both were detected in the same area with the stronger — a 6.7 magnitude earthquake — slamming prior to this quake. The other, measuring 5.2, occurred on Jun. 16.
