5.0 magnitude earthquake rattles close to Severo-Kuril’sk, Russia on July 30

A 5.0 magnitude quake was registered close to Severo-Kuril’sk Wednesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

At 11:23 UTC (21:23 local time), the region was jolted by a tremor. The earthquake hit at a depth of 43 km, with its epicenter about 190 km south of Severo-Kuril’sk.

During the past week, there have been three tremors of magnitude 5.5 or above centered nearby. The largest, measuring 5.6, occurred in the same area prior to this quake.
