Update: Seismic activity on July 16 – 5.2 magnitude earthquake close to Sand Point, AK registered

ALEUTIANS EAST BOROUGH, AK—A 5.2 magnitude quake was detected near Sand Point on Wednesday around midday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

At 10:10 p.m. (11:10 a.m. local time), the region was hit by a tremor. The earthquake jolted at a depth of 19 miles, with its epicenter approximately 60 miles south-southeast of Sand Point.

Earthquakes past week

Last week, there have been 14 tremors of magnitude 2.5 or higher centered nearby, three of them larger than magnitude 7. The largest one was a 7.3 earthquake that was recorded in the same area prior to this quake.
