On Sunday at 5:16 p.m. an updated fire weather watch was issued by the National Weather Service valid for Tuesday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. for Yuma, Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties.

Expect winds to be west 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph and relative humidity as low as 12 percent.

“For Tuesday, low relative humidity and sustained winds around 40 mph could lead to extreme fire spread for any fires that ignite. southwest winds will change to west behind a cold front in the afternoon,” says the NWS. “Unpredictable fire behavior. Any fires that develop may rapidly grow and spread out of control.”

A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.
