Update: Earthquake rattles region near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia on Sept. 28 – 5.0 magnitude registered

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake hit close to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Sunday morning.

It was reported that a tremor shook the area at 14:25 UTC (01:25 local time). The epicenter was situated about 142 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 39 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

Tremors last week

13 tremors with a magnitude 2.5 or above have been recorded in the region during the past week. The largest, measuring 5.0, occurred in the same area two days earlier.
