NIUATOPUTAPU, Niuas — A 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Hihifo on Monday evening, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The USGS reported a tremor in the region at 08:44 UTC (20:44 local time). The epicenter was about 125 km northeast of Hihifo, at a depth of 10 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 4.9 event, but later upgraded it to 5.0.

During the past week, there have been six tremors with a magnitude 5.5 or greater centered nearby. The largest one was a 6.3 earthquake that hit the same area on Mar. 22.
