Update: Dust advisory in place for El Paso County Saturday afternoon

The National Weather Service released an updated dust advisory at 1:24 p.m. on Saturday in effect until 2:15 p.m. for El Paso County.

“At 1:23 p.m., a dust plume was 8 miles southwest of Afton, moving southeast at 25 mph,” states the NWS. “Hazardous travel.”

Locations impacted by the advisory include Westway, Santa Teresa, Vinton, Anthony, Mesquite, Afton, Sunland Park, Union Pacific Intermodal Terminal, Mount Riley, Aden Crater, Anthony Gap, Afton Generating Plant, Chamberino, San Miguel, West El Paso, Canutillo, La Union, La Mesa, Kilbourne Hole and High Valley. This includes the following highways: Interstate 10 in New Mexico between mile markers 149 and 164. Interstate 10 in Texas between mile markers 1 and 17.

According to the NWS, “Blowing dust brings reduced visibility, leading to dangerous driving conditions. If driving, avoid blowing dust if possible. If caught in dense blowing dust, pull off the road, turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake. Motorists should not drive into an area of blowing dust. Pull aside stay alive!”
