System name: Erin

The National Hurricane Center’s 4 a.m. Wednesday advisory reported that Tropical Storm Erin is in the Atlantic Ocean, 1,400 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. Packing maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, it is tracking to the west at 20 mph.

Erin is forecast to change into a hurricane.

Hazards affecting land

Surf. Swells generated by Erin will begin affecting portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by this weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
