Tropical Storm Alvin: Thursday, May 29 update from the National Hurricane Center on latest developments

System name: Alvin

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 10 am Thursday advisory, the weather system gained sufficient intensity to be named Alvin. The tropical depression upgraded to a tropical storm with winds of 40 mph. Tropical Storm Alvin is currently at the Pacific Ocean, 670 miles south-southeast of the Southern Tip of Baja California. Packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, the system is tracking to the northwest at 10 mph.

“Some additional strengthening is expected through tonight, but weakening is expected to begin by late tomorrow” forecasters wrote.

Today, the tropical depression system has officially been named Tropical Storm Alvin, as it has intensified into a tropical storm.
