System name: Alvin

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 10 pm Thursday advisory, the tropical depression named Alvin developed into a tropical storm with winds of 60 mph. Alvin was previously forecasted as a tropical depression but has since gained strength. Tropical Storm Alvin is currently at the Pacific Ocean, 495 miles south-southeast of the Southern Tip of Baja California. Packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, the system is tracking to the northwest at 12 mph.

“A turn toward the north-northwest and north is expected to begin on Friday and continue through the weekend” analysts explained. “Gradual weakening is forecast during the next couple of days, and Alvin is expected to degenerate to a post-tropical low on Saturday”

Today, the tropical depression system has officially been named Tropical Storm Alvin, as it has intensified into a tropical storm.

Hazards affecting land

Surf. Swells generated by Alvin will affect portions of the coasts of west-central Mexico and the southern Baja California Peninsula during the next couple of days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
