On 10 a.m. Thursday, the National Hurricane Center issued an advisory stating that Tropical Storm Erin is in the Atlantic Ocean, 890 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. With maximum sustained winds of 60 mph, the system is moving to the west at 17 mph.
Erin is expected to change into a hurricane.
Hazards affecting land
Surf. Swells generated by Erin will begin affecting portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by this weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
