System name: Barbara

At 4 am Sunday, the National Hurricane Center released the initial advisory for a tropical storm. Tropical Storm Barbara is currently at the Pacific Ocean, 180 miles south-southwest of Zihuatanejo Mexico. With maximum sustained winds of 45 mph, it is moving west-northwest at 12 mph.

“Strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, and Barbara is forecast to become a hurricane on Monday” forecasters noted.

Hazards affecting land

Rainfall. Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, with localized amounts up to 6 inches, are possible across portions of the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacan, Colima, and Jalisco through Monday. This rainfall may lead to areas of flooding and mudslides.

Surf. Swells generated by Barbara will affect portions of the coast of southwestern Mexico during the next few days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
