Update: Earthquake strikes region near San Antonio de los Cobres, Argentina on Sept. 4 – 5.1 magnitude registered

LOS ANDES DEPARTMENT, Salta Province — A 5.1 magnitude quake was recorded near San Antonio de los Cobres Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was reported that a tremor shook the area at 04:10 UTC (01:10 local time). The epicenter was located roughly 86 km west of San Antonio de los Cobres, at a depth of 178 km.

San Antonio de los Cobres area shaken by two quakes over the week

During the past week, there have been two earthquakes greater than magnitude 2.5 centered in the same region. The largest, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, hit three days ago, while the other, measuring 4.4, occurred on August 31.
