The U.S. Geological Survey reported that a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred close to Severo-Kuril’sk Sunday morning.
At 21:24 UTC (07:24 local time), the region was hit by a tremor. The earthquake struck at a depth of 80 km, with its epicenter about 72 km east-northeast of Severo-Kuril’sk.

Tremors last week
Last week, there were two quakes, greater than magnitude 2.5, in the area. The largest, a 4.7 magnitude earthquake, was detected in the same area six days ago, while a smaller 4.5 magnitude quake occurred near Ozernovskiy on September 7.
