Seismic activity on Sept. 17: Earthquake near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia recorded – magnitude 5.0

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 5.0 magnitude quake occurred near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Wednesday morning.

The tremor shook the area at 14:46 UTC (01:46 local time). It occurred at a depth of 10 km with the epicenter situated approximately 192 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Tremors past week

Over the last week, there have been six quakes of magnitude 2.5 or greater centered nearby, two of them larger than magnitude 7. The strongest, a 7.7 magnitude quake, was detected in the same region four days earlier.
