Update: Earthquake of 5.1 magnitude registered close to South Sandwich Islands region on Jan. 21

A 5.1 magnitude quake was detected close to South Sandwich Islands region Wednesday morning, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

A tremor struck the area at 04:54 UTC (02:54 local time). The earthquake’s epicenter was situated of South Sandwich Islands region and occurred at a depth of 35 km. Seismologists first reported it as a 5.2 event, but later downgraded it to 5.1.
