The National Hurricane Center’s 4 p.m. Wednesday update reported that the tropical depression named Gabrielle developed into a tropical storm with winds of 50 mph. Gabrielle was previously forecasted as a tropical depression but has since gained strength. The 10 a.m. report was the first to confirm the system’s new name. Tropical Storm Gabrielle is in the Atlantic Ocean, 990 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. Packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, it is tracking northwest at 14 mph.

“Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours, but some gradual intensification is forecast over the weekend”, analysts explained.

Today, the tropical depression system has officially been named Tropical Storm Gabrielle, as it has intensified into a tropical storm. The system’s new name was first made public in the 10 a.m. advisory.
