The National Hurricane Center’s 10 p.m. Thursday advisory reported that Tropical Storm Gabrielle is in the Atlantic Ocean, 665 miles east-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands. Packing maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, it is tracking west-northwest at 12 mph.

“Little change in strength is forecast over the next 24 hours, but some gradual intensification is forecast shortly thereafter”, meteorologists stated.

Yesterday (Wednesday) at 4 am, the National Hurricane Center published the first advisory for a tropical depression.

The system, which was named Gabrielle, became a tropical storm with sustained winds of 50 mph after intensifying from a tropical depression. Yesterday’s 10 a.m. report was the first to confirm the system’s new name.
