System name: Chantal
The National Hurricane Center’s 10 am Monday advisory reported that Chantal found new strength and had evolved from a tropical depression into a post-tropical cyclone with sustained winds of 30 mph. Chantal passed through North Carolina and then headed to Virginia. Post Tropical Cyclone Chantal is 30 miles north-northeast of Newport News Virginia and 120 miles south-southwest of Dover Delaware. With maximum sustained winds of 30 mph, the system is moving northeast at 17 mph.
“Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours”, meteorologists stated.
Today, the tropical depression named Chantal developed into a post-tropical cyclone with winds of 30 mph. Chantal was previously forecasted as a tropical depression but has since gained strength.
Yesterday (Sunday)
Chantal became a tropical depression with sustained winds of 35 mph after intensifying from a tropical storm.
Hazards affecting land
Rainfall. Post-Tropical Cyclone Chantal will continue to produce heavy rainfall across portions of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania today. Additional rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, with locally higher amounts, is expected. Isolated to scattered flash flooding is possible.

Surf. Life-threatening surf and rip current conditions are expected to continue at beaches along the U.S. east coast from northeastern Florida to the Mid-Atlantic states during the next day or so.
