System name: Humberto

The National Hurricane Center’s 10 p.m. Saturday update reported that Humberto found new strength and has evolved from a Category 4 hurricane into a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 160 mph. Category 5 Hurricane Humberto is in the Atlantic Ocean, 365 miles north of the Northern Leeward Islands and 635 miles south-southeast of Bermuda. Packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph, the hurricane is tracking to the northwest at 13 mph.

“Humberto is forecast to then turn north-northeastward and move west of Bermuda by Tuesday evening”, meteorologists noted about the hurricane.

Yesterday (Friday)

Humberto became a Category 3 hurricane before it progressed to a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 145 mph.

Hazards affecting land

Surf. Swells generated by Humberto will affect portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda beginning tonight and continuing through next week. Swells from Humberto will also affect the U.S. East Coast beginning Monday. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
