A 5.1 magnitude quake occurred close to Ōfunato on Friday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The tremor, which struck the area at 01:44 UTC (10:44 local time), was centered about 60 km southeast of Ōfunato. It occurred at a depth of 34 km.
