The National Hurricane Center’s 10 a.m. Friday advisory reported that Humberto found new strength and had evolved from a tropical storm into a Category 1 hurricane with sustained winds of 75 mph. Category 1 Hurricane Humberto is in the Atlantic Ocean, 450 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands. The hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph, is moving northwest at 5 mph.
“Significant strengthening is expected over the next couple of days, and Humberto is forecast to become a major hurricane later today or on Saturday”, forecasters wrote about the hurricane.
Hazards affecting land
Surf. Swells generated by Humberto will begin affecting portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda this weekend. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
