The National Weather Service issued an updated fire weather watch at 1:08 a.m. on Thursday valid for Friday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. for Western Las Animas County including Trinidad and Thatcher, Eastern Las Animas County including Pinon Canyon and Baca County including Springfield and Eastern Comanche Grasslands.

Winds are expected to be southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph and relative humidity as low as 6% today and as low as 12% on Friday.

“Elevated fire danger is expected. Fires will catch and spread rapidly and erratically,” says the NWS.

According to the NWS, a fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are possible. Listen for later forecasts and possible red flag warnings.
